Before we ask a couple who should write their Form 888 declarations, we ask them to draw a line. The line is the relationship, from the month it began to today. Then we ask them to mark the people who were actually there. Who helped carry boxes into the first shared flat? Who sat at the table at the first family dinner? Who watched them argue about a lease and sign it anyway? The names on that line are the witnesses. Status and seniority come second.
In short: a Form 888 is a statutory declaration from someone who knows the relationship first-hand, usually an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Specific, dated observations in the witness's own words support the social aspect of an $11,710 application, and identical wording across declarations undermines it.
What the officer does with it
Form 888 supports the social aspect of your relationship evidence. It shows that the people around you know you as a couple. Because it is a statutory declaration, it is a formal legal document, and false statements carry legal consequences. Misleading material can also engage PIC 4020, which threatens the application itself. Our note on answering a PIC 4020 letter explains the stakes.
A case officer reads the declarations side by side with your own statements. The officer is looking for independent voices that confirm the same story from different angles. Four voices saying one scripted sentence are not independent.
Draw the line, then pick
The strongest witnesses sit at real points on the relationship's timeline. A version of the line we draw with clients looks like this.
- Month 1The friend who helped move furniture into the first shared home.
- Month 6The parent or sibling who hosted both of you for the first family holiday.
- Month 14The neighbour or landlord who knows you as the couple in the corner unit.
- Month 20The colleague who met your partner at a work function and has seen you together since.
- Month 24The friend who was there for the engagement, the baby or the business launch.
Each of those people saw something different. Together they cover the household, the family, the public life and the long term. That spread matters more than the number of forms.
Who can sign one
A Form 888 witness must be an adult who knows about your relationship. Supporting witnesses are usually Australian citizens or permanent residents, and each attaches evidence of identity and status. Most applications include at least two such declarations. Overseas friends and family can support the file in other formats.
Who is offering to write a declaration for you?
Four things every declaration carries
How the witness knows you
Their relationship to each of you, how you met them and how often they see you. This tells the officer how much weight the declaration deserves.
What they observed
Specific memories beat general praise. A sentence like "they hosted our Diwali dinner in 2025 and share a townhouse in Preston" says something real. "They are a lovely couple" says almost nothing. Dates, places and events make a declaration believable.
Their view, and why
The witness should say plainly that they believe the relationship is genuine and continuing. Then they should say what they saw that leads them to that view.
Proper execution
The declaration must be signed and witnessed under the applicable statutory declaration rules. Check the current form's instructions for who may witness the signature. An unsigned or badly witnessed form loses its force.
When one of you owns a business
Founders often reach first for the people closest to hand. A co-director, a long-standing supplier, the accountant. Some of these make excellent witnesses, because they have seen the couple's shared life around the business. The accountant who set up the family trust knows exactly who the beneficiaries are.
Two cautions. An employee on the applicant's payroll is not independent, and a declaration from staff invites questions about pressure. Prefer people outside the business. And keep the declaration to the relationship. Company matters belong in the financial evidence, which our note on the four pillars of relationship evidence covers.
What weakens a declaration
Identical wording across declarations reads as scripted. Adjectives without observations waste the form. Exaggeration risks the credibility of the whole application, because a statutory declaration that overstates what the witness knows is a false statement. Stale declarations lose impact, so collect them near lodgement. And details that contradict your own statements invite a request.
Before each declaration goes in the file
Should we send our witnesses a template?
No. Send topics, not sentences. Tell each witness which part of the line they sit on and ask them to write about what they saw there. A one-page declaration with real detail beats three pages of generalities. If a witness freezes, offer a four-part shape. How they know you, two or three occasions, what they observed about your shared life, and their honest view.

Frequently asked questions
Can our accountant or business partner give a Form 888?
Yes, if they are an adult who knows the relationship first-hand and meet the usual status requirement. Their declaration should describe what they saw of you as a couple, not the company's affairs.
Can an employee of my company be a witness?
It is possible, but an employee is not independent of the applicant. A declaration from staff invites questions about pressure, so we prefer witnesses outside the business.
Does a witness who is not a citizen or permanent resident help?
Their account can still support the file in another format. Form 888 declarations are usually from Australian citizens or permanent residents, so keep at least two of those and add other statements around them.
Should a declaration mention my visa history?
Only what the witness knows first-hand. Visa history belongs in your own statements and forms. A witness repeating something they were told adds nothing and can create inconsistency.
How many occasions should a witness describe?
Two or three, each with a date, a place and what happened. That is enough to show first-hand knowledge without padding the declaration.
